As part of the province-wide initiative from the Ontario Heritage Trust, the 5th annual Doors Open Aurora event takes place on August 21, 2010 in Aurora, Ontario, Canada.
The Doors Open Aurora event seeks to celebrate, educate and inform local residents and visitors of the importance of the architectural, cultural and historical sites in Aurora. It offers a rare opportunity to explore sites of interest, many of which are not normally open to the public. Participants are able to tour buildings, take guided tours, view special exhibits and displays during the single day event - all for free!
Since its beginning in Aurora in 2006, the Doors Open event has registered over 10,515 site visits to over 72 Aurora landmark buildings and sites. This year, the provincial Doors Open theme is "Process for Change". Following this, many sites will be displaying "Then and Now" photo exhibits to portray the sites as they were in the past and as they exist today.
Doors Open 2010 will feature some of the town's most outstanding heritage projects and sites. Included among them is the Church Street School Cultural Centre, a municipally-sponsored restoration project of one of the most architecturally-significant public school buildings in Ontario; the Hillary House, a National Historic site; the former Methodist Parsonage - Lester B. Pearson's boyhood home; the Charles Henry Sheppard House & Conservation Area; Rising Sun Masonic Lodge and many more.
