Waste & Recycling Collection
Thank you Aurora, for demonstrating your care for the environment, not just in our beautiful town, but also in the surrounding communities. Your ongoing participation in the many new environmental initiatives and green practices that we have introduced has resulted in substantial reductions in the amount and cost of waste.
New addition to the Blue Box Program
York Region staff have identified Spiral Wound Containers as a viable material to add to the list of acceptable Blue Box items. Spiral Wound Containers are cylindrical containers comprised of a paperboard body, steel base, and optional plastic lid - a typical example is the Pillsbury Dough package.
Expansion of collection points for Used Cooking Oil
The cooking oil recycling program is now available at McCleary Court CEC and all four of the Region's Household Hazardous Waste depots. The cooking oil recycling program is for York Region residents only; cooking oil will not be accepted from businesses. Cooking oil must be placed in a tightly-sealed container, less than 4 litres in size. Solidified animal fat is not accepted for cooking oil recycling. However, it can be placed in the Green Bin. Cooking oil collected from residents will be recycled into biodiesel. Elgin Mills does not accept cooking oil.
If you have any questions about the cooking oil program please email
Green for Life Environmental Corporation
Turtle Island Recycling Corporation, the Town's garbage and recycling contractor, has recently been purchased by GFL
(Green for Life) Environmental Corporation. Over time, residents will notice that collection vehicles will bear the GFL logo and colours. Residents can expect to enjoy the same excellent customer service that they currently receive.
